COOPER NETS SHOOTOUT WINNER AS VISUALEYES EDGE THE PEACE FROGS

Team Visualeyes was out matched early on in the game, but came up big late when it counted, earning a 4-3 shootout win Sunday night against the Peace Frogs at Buffalo State Arena.

MAXY #21
Sloppy Visualeyes' defense led to a two goal deficit after the opening period, but strong team play helped Visualeyes come back to win their first shootout of the year. "The first period wasn't great, but we fought back and battled hard. It was a tough way to win." said Max Bonito (Amherst)

Sparking the comeback, rookie forward, Dan Brown (Lancaster) finally got the ink wet on the score sheet for Visualeyes early on in the second period. Brown buried his seventh goal of the year, crashing the net hard from the left boards after Eric Schottke (Tonawanda) dropped him a perfect pass. Brown added his second of the night and eighth goal of the year early on in the third period on the penalty kill after Player/coach/GM/equipment manager Drew Leberer (North Tonawanda) broke up a Peace Frog break out, tipping the puck to an open Brown. Brown then walked a Peace Frog defender and slid the puck past the diving goalie.

Adam Roma (Lancaster) and Team Visualeyes shut the door defensively, not allowing a goal after the 9 minute mark of the second period. Roma pushed aside 23 of 26 shots to notch his sixth win of the season. Roma said of the win, "I'm feeling a lot better than Stevie Johnson today. I think it's God's fault we got the win."

Veteran forward Bob Simpson-Corigliano's (Tonawanda) wheels were turning all night, and he was finally rewarded halfway through the third on a beautiful feed by center-man Donny Borsuk (West Seneca). As always, a very vocal Simpson-Corigliano shared this with reporters, "We have to learn not to take any game lightly. We got players out there using new skates, others laughing out there after they get scored on, and the list goes on and on. Some people need to step up and play at a high level at all times; and Ryan Donnelly needs to play better."

The Peace Frogs' typical Sunday night, clog up the middle, get in your way style of hockey kept the game much closer than the scoreboard showed. Visualeyes struggled to light the lamp, putting 45 shots on net, getting caught up in unfamiliar areas. After 45 minutes of play, the two teams found themselves locked at three goals a piece and headed to a shootout.

It wasn't until the sixth round of shooters when T.J. Cooper (Hamburg) burned Peace Frogs goalie five-hole, giving Team V their sixth win of the year. "That's where I'll go every time, right between his legs!" noted Cooper on the bench after the game. Adam Roma held strong, allowing only one goal on six tries.

The shootout has not been so friendly to Team V this year, finally winning their first of  three attempts. "The guys in this room are so talented, so skilled, and Roma has been at the top of his game, its unbelievable that it took until almost December to get our first win in the shootout. Sure, we would have liked to take them out in regulation, but two points are two points. I think this will definitely give us some confidence down the road." said Leberer.
